A Southern Picnic First Birthday Party

For some reason, I spent an outrageous amount of time thinking about Finley's first birthday party. I LOVE planning parties, get togethers, even a weekend with family, but this party was in its own category. The realization that it was a celebration for ALL of us made it extra important.

Since I love a good theme party, I decided we would have a Southern BBQ. This was great for a number of reasons- but mostly because I've sung Finley the song "A Bushel and Peck" every nap and bedtime since she was a few days old. Also, my paternal family is from the Southern United States and a contingent would be in attendance at the party. Not to mention, the decor would be adorable and the menu options are delicious and plentiful. Theme, decided!

We invited our usual mom and baby squad, our family and friends, and somehow ended up with 40 adults and 7 babies. Fingers were crossed for the month leading into the party that it would be a perfect summer day, but the week of the party, the weather was not so great. Thankfully, it turned out to be a lovely day and we could all be outside.

Our hungry friends munched on pulled pork, brisket, hot corn salad, Southern Layered salad, and watermelon. The wizards over at The Dessert Room put together a beautiful rustic cake and red velvet cupcakes for dessert. And it wouldn't be a Southern BBQ without some Banana Pudding, so of course, we had that too. Since it was so hot, plenty of Rose and beer was on ice for the thirsty adults.

First Birthday parties are as much about the babies as they are a celebration for us parents. We made it through a year of unknown, scary, sleepless learning, and have come out on the other side confident, joyful and almost ready to do it again!
